This article is the sixth in a series of posts exploring the Essential Six Elements of Whole Health, the core of our health philosophy and the foundation for our work with our nutritional therapy clients.

This article will be in two parts, this is part one. Learn more about the Essential Elements and find the rest of the series here.

Part One

The Thoughts & Emotions Element requires that we eliminate negative thought & emotional patterns, balance stress, are inspired, creative, find purpose in our lives and address the energy system of the body.

Our thoughts and emotions are powerful things. They actually are THINGS, with a frequency that can be measured, and they have a strong effect on our health.

Your body responds to the way you think, feel and act. This is often called the “mind/body connection.” When you are stressed, anxious or upset, your body tries to tell you that something isn’t right.

For example, high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer might develop after a particularly stressful event, such as the death of a loved one.

The following can be physical signs that your emotional health is out of balance:

• Back pain
• Change in appetite
• Chest pain
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Dry mouth
• Extreme tiredness
• General aches and pains
• Headaches
• High blood pressure
• Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
• Lightheadedness
• Palpitations (the feeling that your heart is racing)
• Sexual problems
• Shortness of breath
• Stiff neck
• Sweating
• Upset stomach
• Weight gain or loss

Poor emotional health can weaken your body’s immune system, making you more likely to get colds and other infections during emotionally difficult times.

Also, when you are feeling stressed, anxious or upset, you may not take care of your health as well as you should. Abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs may also be a sign of poor emotional health.

Our cells have memory, and sometimes old thoughts or emotional patterns can get trapped in the cells and contribute to health problems.

There are multiple methods that can help to clear these patterns and unblock the energy needed to restore health. Two of the methods that I use most often in my practice are aromatherapy and EFT, or meridian tapping.

Sometimes combining these can be very effective.

In the next installment, we’ll discuss aromatherapy and EFT for emotional balance and stress relief, and discuss how inspiration, creativity and finding purpose in our lives affects our health. Find that article here.
